MacKenzie Bird - conquering the brass!
MacKenzie commenced the euphonium at a Cootamundra band “try-out” session in 2008 when 8 years of age. He chose this instrument because it was “different”. In October 2009 MacKenzie began to learn from Alison Patterson. The following year MacKenzie gained an honours in his First Grade examination and he hasn’t looked back! Attending his first of 4 Border Music Camps held in Albury in July, he won one of the major awards, the Pringle Family Trophy for endeavour. He finished his schooling from Sacred Heart here in Cootamundra at The Scots School Albury and went on to do a Horticulture course at Wodonga TAFE. On his return home because of Covid-19, MacKenzie recommenced his euphonium studies in November 2020 now at Grade 6 level and also commenced learning the Trumpet! Previously he has learned glockenspiel, percussion and drums. MacKenzie has played at many Eisteddfods and has been a committed member of the Cootamundra band where he has played in many concerts. MacKenzie has been the solo “bugler” for many services commemorating ANZAC Day.
What will be his next blast? !
Kay Bird - the songbird!
Kay began playing the flute with the Cootamundra Band in Term 1, 2010. Not only did she support her son MacKenzie, who was learning the euphonium and decided to add percussion to his list of instruments to try, she succumbed to the desire to learn the flute with Alison Patterson in 2016. Now that her family of 4 children were getting older, Kay was getting younger as she trilled away on the flute. Kay has enthusiastically embraced examinations and Eisteddfods, playing solo and in ensembles at concerts, to learn more and now is playing at Grade 5 level. A very committed member of the Cootamundra Band, Kay also supported the Young Town Band and recently the Tumut Town Band where she now lives.
But she continues to be drawn by her original desire to play the flute in Cootamundra!
Eliza Cowell
Eliza will be turning 13 the day before Celebrate with Music. She started learning with Alison in 2015 when she was still six years old. She played at home on a piano that belonged to her great grandmother, Cootamundra resident Ethel Meale. Unfortunately in 2020 the 110 year old wood, strings and ivory could not keep up with the pressure of being played regularly and was replaced with an electric piano. She's been lucky to be able to play with Alison and more recently, duets with Sue Guy. We're looking forward to the concert.
Sue Guy
This is my first public performance. My lessons began in 2019. Prior to then, there would always be ‘live’ music in my home... acoustic and bass guitar, mandolin, piano, harmonica and even a piano accordian was heard occasionally! So if ‘Live’ music was to be heard again in my home, then I needed to be the musician. My concert duets have been great fun...thank you Eliza. My solo piece comes from a collection by a French composer, Yann Tiersen who wrote the film score for “Amelie”. With Alison’s patience and skill, it is my goal to master all his others!
